Ars Grammatica is a course of study in the art of grammar, in which a student can learn many aspects of the traditional art with interactive and corrective exercises from simple to complex.
Ars Grammatica: A Course in the Art of Grammar
Ars Grammatica teaches grammar as a liberal art, the art of speaking and writing correctly. It follows the classical grammarians, mainly Priscian and Donatus, and draws on Aristotle and St. Thomas for the principles grammar borrows from philosophy. Examples come in English, Latin, Greek, French, and German.
The course starts with what grammar is and what it studies, from letters and syllables up through words and sentences. Next come the parts of speech and their accidents, such as case, number, gender, tense, and mood. After that it covers construction, meaning how words join into well-formed sentences, and the reasons each part of speech exists. Then come faults, licenses, and figures of speech, how grammar differs from logic, and whether all languages share one grammar. It ends with four other grammatical traditions: Sanskrit, Arabic, Chinese, and Hebrew.
