This page is an invitation and a map. It is not the sister course. Nothing here will teach you to count, to measure a line, to hear an interval, or to save a star. Those arts have their own work. This walk-through stops at speech, on purpose.
You have already used quantity. You have counted what was on the table. You have trusted a clock, a scale, a graph. Modern schooling often wants to begin there: as if number were the first language of knowledge, and the rest decoration. The wish is intelligible. Measure can correct a story we liked. It cannot, by itself, say what was counted, or whether the count was of the same kind of thing twice.
The limit is the one this course has been teaching. A number that cannot be named cannot be shared. A measurement that cannot be stated cannot be checked. The trivium is not a delay of mathematics. It is how quantity enters a common mind at all. Kearns’s Preface puts the three arts of speech as foundations on which the other disciplines are built. This course does not add a Kearns doctrine of number beyond that. It only keeps the order already used: remain with words until speech can bear truth.
The quadrivium assumes the trivium largely underway, and in its proper form largely mastered. It does not begin from “STEM careers.” It begins from quantity, and from quantity’s application to what is. Classically there are four arts here. Arithmetic treats multitude — the countable. Geometry treats magnitude — the continuous, the line and the figure. Music treats quantity as it is found in sound. Astronomy treats quantity as it is found in the moving heavens. The last two are not “electives.” They are quantity applied. This page will not divide them further, and it will not start their proofs.
When a sister walk-through is written, it will use the same pedagogical pattern this one used. It will start from modern expectations about number and measure — that they are the first and sufficient language of the real. It will show the cost of that sufficiency: a count that does not know its unit, a model that cannot say what it is a model of, a career in “STEM” that still has to write a report. Then it will teach the classical generality: quantity as such, and then its applications, rather than a list of jobs.
